It was a night to remember for the BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort team after being awarded gold in the Caravan and Holiday Parks category at the prestigious Qantas Australian Tourism Awards 2022, held in Sydney on Friday night. This success resulted in the popular resort being awarded their third gold award at a national level in recent years and after winning gold in the same category at the Queensland Tourism Awards last November, paving for the way for gold once more at a national level.
The popular Whitsunday Resort has been owned and operated by the McKinnon family for the past 29 years and has seen a phenomenal transformation over the years to the 4.5 star, multi award winning property that it is today.
Owner Greg McKinnon, who attended the awards ceremony on Friday night with both family and staff, was both ecstatic and emotional upon being announced as the national winner.
“As both a family and a team, we are all so very proud to win this award. The Australian Tourism Awards are the pinnacle of awards in our industry and we are so proud to not only have won gold, but to have shared a part in celebrating the very best that Australia has to offer. We have am amazing team of 74 amazingly warm, friendly and passionate staff, the most loyal guests and supportive industry peers who are all always gold in our eyes’” said Greg.
“We extend our congratulations to all the other finalists and winners, especially our other Whitsunday colleagues, Ocean Rafting Whitsundays and Magnums Airlie Beach, who also placed silver and bronze respectively, so it was a trifecta for the Whitsundays for sure,” continued Greg.
“It’s such an honour and a reward for the whole team in what has been a huge year. We have so many more exciting projects on the books, including our Bunk House dormitory style accommodation for groups and the budget FIT market, more new cabins and developments to our resort pool area and Kid’s Club, so there is a lot in the pipeline add some exciting new facilities which will lead the way in terms of holiday park activities and facilities,” said Greg.
Over the past year, BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort has focused on its offerings for guests with accessible needs, including a new vision impaired cabin, resort Braille signage, and of course, the resort’s Sensory Room, the Reilly Room, which caters for children on the autism spectrum and their families by offering a special holiday retreat.
