Multi award-winning BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort celebrates 30 years of bringing the fun to holidaymakers visiting the Whitsundays!
Owned by the McKinnon family since 1993, the resort’s success is a testament to the hard work and continual investment by the family throughout. Purchased as a run-down but operational caravan park, the 30 years since have seen a phenomenal transformation to the 4.5 star, multi award winning property that it is today, having won over 45 major tourism awards throughout the years and with two generations of the family involved in the running of the business.
Enjoying the celebrations with a birthday party for guests and staff poolside, owner, Greg McKinnon, proudly shared how far they’ve come over the years.
“As a family, we are all immensely proud of what we have achieved. We’ve developed a leading Queensland holiday park, but with all the offerings of an island resort. With the longevity we’ve had, our success stems from a multitude of factors and there have obviously been ups and downs throughout the years, however, to stand here today and be so proud of what we have achieved is just fantastic,’ said Greg.
“We have welcomed thousands of families, where mum and dad enjoy a holiday too and grandparents join in the fun and reconnect on a multi-generational level. We also love welcoming our retired caravanners, who come up from the southern states to enjoy the warmth of a tropical winter, some who have returned every year and who are like our own family,” Greg continued.
BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort is also renowned for welcoming groups, from multi-generational and social groups to school groups selecting one of the resort’s educational programs. Cementing its reputation as a leader in Queensland holidays, the resort also offers a range of accessible accommodation and facilities, all established within an open and safe environment.
Having worked for the McKinnon family for 18 years, the resort’s HR/Accounts Manager, Andrea Mearns, reflected on the resort’s growth and culture.
“The values and ethics of the McKinnon family, still to this day, reflect the culture and vibe we have long seen as the team. We have over 80 staff now and it’s a big operation, but it has been well run throughout and as employees, without doubt, it would have to be one of the best places in the Whitsundays to work.”
To celebrate the 30year milestone, the McKinnon family, guests and staff enjoyed poolside nibbles, drinks and live music.
“It was a fabulous night celebrating the years and many more to come. We have so many exciting projects underway, including our Bunk House dormitory style accommodation for groups, more accessible holiday options, new cabins and some major resort developments around our central pool area slated for next year. There is always something in the pipeline and we’re always adding exciting new facilities, to ensure we continue growing as a well-established Australian resort,” said Greg.
